My Background

last update 11-25-13

The purpose of this page isn't to provide a resume, but to give you enough information about my background to help you place my collecting interests and review opinions in some kind of context. Basically, I'm old, retired, and a 'techie'.

My academic background is in chemistry (Ph.D. University of Alabama). Worked with X-ray diffractometry, nuclear magnetic resonance, scanning electron microscopy, thermal analysis, and instrumental analysis in general. My chemical work has almost always involved math and computer programming. Programmed mainframes, minicomputers (back when there were such things), microcomputers, and now smartphones. Programming languages have ranged from various assemblers to C variants.

My 'working life' has been varied. Been an analytical chemist for an iron foundry and a water treatment plant. Was a radioanalytical chemist for the nuclear power generation program of a government utility. Worked as a research chemist studying the wastes from fossil power plants and the beneficiation of phosphate ore. Worked as an engineering manager on constructed wetlands, ammonia emissions control, and industrial by-product utilization. Worked as a consultant and grant-writer in the areas of pollution prevention, waste reduction, and energy management.

Somewhere along the line acquired an M.B.A. with a focus in Finance and Accounting. Did some consulting in business/accounting issues and served as a volunteer Treasurer or bookkeeper for several non-profit organizations.

Always been interested in some kind of electronics as a hobby... in early days, building kits and other things out of discrete components (back when there were such things); now working with Arduino and Raspberry Pi-type boards. Also have a ham radio (amateur extra) license - K4ZCM.
